Hop, skip and a mongoose
June 7 2014

To bring in the new month, the research team was following the pride from the Tree Tops area on the 1st of June.  After pausing occasionally to sniff the crisp morning air, AS4 hung back from the pride.  She seemed fixated on something in the tall grass by a large ant hill. With ears forward and walking back and forth carefully, she sat and stared in the area, mesmerized at something.  The creature ran across the grass and the research team saw it was a mongoose!  AS4 was patient and watched intently.  She positioned herself with great precision and before the research team knew it, she lifted her body onto her hind legs, tucked her forelegs to her chest and leapt over the tall wall of grass onto the unaware mongoose!

AS4 disappeared for a second but then the research team found her turning all around her and looking for the tricky creature.  After a few minutes, she gave up on her play toy and then noticed the pride had continued on without her.  She jumped out of the grass and trotted up the ant hill to see where her pride members walked off to.  Once she found them, she greeted everyone, almost telling them what she was up to and what she almost caught.

Later that morning, one of the other young lions was feeling the playful bug.  KE3 had a sudden burst of energy and pranced over to Kwali to try and play with her, which was soon stopped by a quick growl and repositioning herself further away.  KE3 wasn’t done yet.  She saw her father fast asleep and attempted to see what mood he was in.  She snuck up to him, first making a wide birth around the sleeping beast, and then casually sniffed him all over and then pawed him every now and again.  She then ran around him a few times and sniffed him once more to see if he was awake...

He was!

Milo & KE3

He gave a quick growl and she got the message.  She then saw her half-sister watching and knowing that AS4 would be willing to play with her she pounced and had a great return.  They wrestled for a while and then, to everyone’s surprise, Milo got involved!  He chased KE3 around Phyre and around a tree until he ran out of steam and settled down.  KE3 was also done for the day.  Was this a telling off or did he catch the playful bug too?
