Silent but Deadly
March 15 2014

With daunting and threatening skies slowly creeping toward the release site, the research team was wary of what was to come and if they would be able to find the lions.  Fortunately, they were in for a surprise.  The research team was driving down the boundary road toward the Tree Tops area when they found Ashanti and AS5 in the road coming out of the bush.  The team followed the mother and kin and found the rest of the pride playing in the tall grass, clearly on a high from the cool temperatures and the approaching storm.  Milo was on his own in the Amboseli area resting on his back, not aware of what was to come.

Watching the pride being carefree in the grass, the research team noticed only 9 lions in the squirming social pile.  Moments later, Nala comes out of the thicket by water hole three, her face dirty.  The research team thought it was only mud from the earlier rains, but quickly realized when she approached closer that she had something else on her face.

The pride suddenly was vigilant to her and the location from where she emerged.  They all ran, leaped, and pounced on the patch of trees Nala appeared from.  The research team was bewildered at what just happened and slowly crept toward where the sudden interest was. There was a kill.

Ashanti, KE3, and KE4 jumped on the left over carcass, snarling and growling when anyone else came near.

Meanwhile, Nala was contently licking her paws about ten meters away while the pride scrambled to grab any scraps that they could.

After watching the lions continuously rotating, Milo joined in on the little feast at hand.  Failing to succeed in getting a share he moved on with the rest of the pride once the carcass was demolished.  What was a skilled and quiet kill for Nala, was a tasty snack for the rest.
